Features
FIVE SCHOLARS - Lola Raimbekova enjoys carrying a full bag of books around campus.

“I feel like I'm a student again,” said Raimbekova, an English instructor at Khorog State University in her native Tajikistan in central Asia.

Raimbekova is one of five scholars from Eurasia and Eastern Europe who are spending the spring semester at Iowa State as part of a U.S. Department of State program.

The Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP) allows newer faculty members in humanities and social sciences an opportunity to attend classes at American universities and collaborate with established scholars.

This semester marks the fifth consecutive year that the Department of World Languages and Cultures has been selected as a JFDP host institution. The five participants this year bring to 18 the number of JFDP scholars who have studied at ISU. Scholars have come from Russia and Eastern and Central European nations.
Learn more about the JFDP program on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/jfdp0225.shtml.

Awards

STUDENT NOMINATIONS - The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking nominations for the 2008 LAS Student International Excellence Award. This award recognizes outstanding students with majors in the college who have excelled in internationally-focused academic or extra-curricular activities.

Nominations should be directed to Dave Gieseke, 223 Catt Hall, dgieseke@iastate.edu, by Monday, March 10. A nomination template and criteria for the award is on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/international/lasstudentaward.shtml.

Courses
The Department of World Languages and Cultures will offer Intensive Summer Chinese courses in 2008. The courses are designed for students who have no previous experience learning or speaking Chinese. When combined with coursework during the regular academic year, Iowa State's Summer Intensive Chinese courses provide a unique opportunity to accelerate the study of Chinese by enabling students to reach the proficiency level normally attained through two years of regular study in just 11 months.

Chinese 101 will be offered May 19 to June 13 followed by Chinese 102 from June 16 to July 11. Space is limited to 15 students per section.
