LAS International On-Line is the bi-monthly on-line publication of the International Programs of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. LAS International is part of LAS- ongoing efforts to coordinate all aspects of international activities within the College including international studies, study abroad, exchange agreements, research and outreach.

Features
HIGH AND LOW - In successive years, the preeminent science fiction writer Jules Verne wrote about a journey to the center of the earth and then about a trip from the earth to the moon.

James Andrews, associate professor of history, is taking a similar journey. With the publication next year of his book, Red Cosmos, Andrews has written a cultural biography of the "grandfather of Russian rocketry," K.E. Tsiolkovskii. Tsiolkovskii first conceived multi-stage rockets that were later adapted for the U.S. and Soviet space programs.

For a follow-up Andrews has decided to spurn the heights of man's space achievements for a look at the Russian underground - the building of the Moscow Metro.

"I like to pick projects that have multidisciplinary aspects to them," he says. "In my case, I'm interested in the political and cultural aspects as well as the technological and scientific background of a project. These three things intersect quite often as they do in both the Soviet space program and the building of the Moscow Metro."

THE HUMAN FACTOR - Just inside Eric Abbott's office door is an oversized Russian wall poster illustrated with cartoon characters. It's a souvenir from one of his many international projects during his career, but it's also symbolic of his efforts to convince Americans to understand the "human factor" of global relations.

"Of all the projects in which I have been involved in all the different countries, they all have something in common - the human factor," said Abbott, professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.

On April 1 Abbott received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Distinguished International Service Award. The honor recognized his "extensive and far-reaching" international efforts for four decades.

The award joins two others he has garnered this year. He won the International Award from the Association for Communication Excellence, a professional organization for communicators, and also the Harry Heath/Lou Thompson Jr. advising award from the Greenlee School.

Awards
Richard Mansbach, professor of political science, has been named a recipient of Iowa State's International Service Award for 2008. He will be recognized at the fall University Convocation.

Mansbach has established himself as one of the world's leading scholars in the field of international relations, developing an international reputation as a pioneer of an approach that emphasizes non-state actors and identity rather than states and material power.

Study Abroad
Faculty who plan to propose a group study abroad program should review new College of Liberal Arts and Sciences guidelines and deadlines for proposal review. LAS faculty must obtain approval from their academic unit and the college before the proposal can be reviewed by the ISU Study Abroad and Exchange Advisory Committee.

Deadlines and other information is on-line.
