Junior Faculty Development Program - 2007

During the Spring  semester of 2007, the Department of World Languages and Cultures is hosting three scholars from Eurasia and Eastern Europe as participants of the Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP).   JFDP is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State that affords junior faculty in humanities and social sciences an opportunity to attend classes at American Universities and to work closely with established American scholars.  The program is competitive for both the scholars and the host institution;  WLC has been selected as a host institution for four years in a row and has now hosted over 10 scholars from Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.  In addition to helping create a cohesive academic REEES community on the ISU campus, these scholars have been instrumental in linking WLC and the REEES program to various departments and colleges at ISU such as Business, Architecture, Linguistics, and Engineering, and Agriculture.  Several ISU faculty mentors have developed serious academic bonds with their JFDP-ers: most recently Mary Barratt (Department of English) received a Fulbright grant to work on a joint project with Alexei Konobeev (JFDP, 2005) in Tambov, Russia.

Scholars the Department of World Languages and Cultures are hosting in 2007 include:

Bojan Karanakov is an architect from the Ss. Cyril & Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia. His research interests include the Inverse Perspective as a graphic system in the Byzantine fresco painting.  During his stay at ISU Bojan is hoping to learn new approaches to teaching graphic communications and to apply this knowledge to curricular transformation at his home university.  At ISU Bojan works with Michael Golec, Assistant Professor of Art, Design, and Architecture.

Hasan Avdusinovic is a Senior Assistant in the Department for Metallurgy and Materials Science at the University of Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hasan is currently preparing work towards a Ph.D. in Metallurgy and Metallic Sciences.  He is particularly interested in investigating environmental issues that pertain to metallurgy, such as waste management and pollution reduction.  In addition to taking a number of classes in Material Engineering at ISU, Hasan is also working with Gene Takle, Professor of Atmopheric Science and Agricultural Meteorology.

Akhliddin Ismailov is a lecturer at the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research teaching courses in Corporate Finance, Risk Management, and Financial Statement Analysis.  Akhliddin is particularly interested in developing new courses on Insurance, a subject almost completely undeveloped in the Universities of the former Soviet Union.  Akhliddin’s faculty mentor is Howard Van Auken in the College of Business.

For more information on the JFDP program, see www.jfdp.org or contact Olga Mesropova, assistant professor of Russian and ISU JFDP coordinator.
