The daughters of Alice Case nominate our mother to be included in the Plaza of Heroines. Alice was born November 24, 1908, in Boone, Iowa, to Edgar and Clara Shelters Mann. She graduated from Boone High School. She attended Lombard College in Galesburg, Illinois, and then Iowa State College, at Ames, Iowa. She attended art school in Chicago, Illinois, and worked for Carson Pierre Scott, a major department store in Chicago. She left college to manage her father's furniture store in Boone when he became ill. This was not a common employment for a woman to assume in that era, but mother assumed the responsibility.
She married Thomas Case and had four daughters. After her daughters were older, she began a long career in community work in many diverse areas. She helped to establish Headstart in Boone county and donated many hours of work. She was a president of the Parents and Teachers Association for Page School in Boone. She was a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher and a church leader. She managed her church's local low income emergency fund. She also has been president of the Boone Garden Club and the Boone Women's Club. She was a co-founder of the Boone Historical Society and is active today in that society.
Our mother has helped the people of Boone in direct and indirect ways over the years. We want to honor her by including her accomplishments in the Plaza of Heroines. 7/1/96 |
