	Janet Dieken Jackson Long Beach, California Brick Section F - Row 24
I am honoring my sister, Janet Dieken Jackson, because I feel she has used her Home Economics (Applied Art) education to enrich the lives of hundreds of adult women throughout her long teaching career, and also for applying Home Economic principles in her home, family and community life. Janet was born in Grundy County, Iowa and received her BS degree in Home Economics from Iowa State in December, 1942, majoring in Applied Art. She began her career as retail display assistant in a major Cleveland, Ohio, department store. From there she moved to California, where she served as a Home Service Representative for the Southern California Gas Company in the Los Angeles Area. She moved to Long Beach in 1946 when she married Gordon K. Jackson, World War II Marine paratrooper. There she taught for several years in the Junior High Home Economics department. In 1950 they adopted Christune Anne (Dimichele) and put her career on hold. She resumed teaching in 1957 and for 22 years was on the staff of Long Beach State and City Colleges in the Adult Division teaching half-time various Home Economics subjects: Interior Decorating; Creative Stitchery, Textiles and Clothing and Food. She retired in 1979 and continues her Long Beach activities in Home Economists in Action, P.E.0, Embroiderers Guild of America, Presbyterian Church. 1/12/95
