Carolyn M. Kalsow

Brick Section G - Row 7

Carolyn M. Kalsow is one of those remarkably energetic people who can successfully pursue several major endeavors at the same time. Career-wise, Carolyn went on from a BS in Bacteriology from Iowa State (65) to earn a MA in Microbiology from the University of Texas and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Louisville. Since then she has had a distinguished career in ophthalmology research. Carolyn has published over 33 research articles and presented research findings to many audiences in the United States and six foreign countries.Honors include: Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, Distinguished Alumna of Elgin Community College, Kentucky Colonel, and two Visual Sciences Study Sections for the NIH. She continues to earn the respect of her peers, nationally and internationally, for her knowledge of the immunology of the eye and pineal gland.

Apart from Carolyn's research efforts, she leads a very active family life. She is married to Richard W. Krause and the mother of five children, four of which have graduated from college and the fifth one in
college. She started her own laboratory in Louisville (University of Louisville), then moved it to Holland, Michigan (Hope College) and then to Rochester, New York (University of Rochester), to accommodate two careers and a family. Carolyn also finds time to stay in touch with her extended family in the Chicago area and to recruit for Iowa State.

Another major endeavor that Carolyn has pursued diligently is her Christian faith. She has been very active in many Lutheran church functions including teacher, Council
member, Constitution Committee, Finance Committee, Convention Committee, and Campus Ministries. Her commitment includes befriending others that have special needs especially a number of elderly persons.

In all of the above endeavors it is apparent that Carolyn has multiplied her blessings for
the benefit of others.
