The Reverend Dr. Josephine Auner Barnes
Josephine Auner Barnes was born in Algona, Iowa, on February 28, 1925. She later moved to Des Moines in 1933. After graduating from St. Katherine's Episcopal School, she earned a B.A. in English Literature with a minor in philosophy, a Master of Divinity degree, and a Doctor of Ministry. Jo has been active as a volunteer in numerous organizations related to health, welfare, and human development. She has worked for the American Junior Red Cross, as a Director of Christian Education, as Coordinator of the Des Moines Public Schools volunteer Program, and as Director of Bidwell Riverside Center in Des Moines. She has lived on an active Iowa farm with her husband, Walter C. Barnes, a farmer, since their marriage in 1947. They raised three children.
When asked how she became a leader, Jo replied that she had never intentionally set out to become a leader, but had proceeded from one thing to another with one thing building on another, accepting opportunities as they came along. She feels her education gave her skills in organization, writing, and human relations; and her volunteer work provided opportunities to develop skills in working with people, serving on boards, and understanding budgets and finances. Her volunteer work also provided the opportunity to learn about other social service agencies and resources in the community.
She has been nominated to the Plaza of Heroines for her dedication to all individuals and the development of their potential through her work in the promotion of volunteerism and her service as an ordained minister.
The following is an incomplete resume of her varied activities, employment and areas of service.
