Elizabeth (Betty) A. Elliott

Paver Area 35

Elizabeth (Betty) A. Elliott has served Iowa State University Cooperative Extension in numerous capacities and many people have enjoyed working with her.

Betty's career has spanned 35 years, with 14 of those in Iowa. She held positions in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences as Assistant Dean and State Leader, Home Economics Programs (March 1977 to June 1979) and Associate Dean and State Leader, Home Economics (July 1979 to January 1989). In February 1989, she became Interim Dean-University
Extension, Interim Director-Cooperative Extension, and Professor-Family and Consumer Sciences Education. When ISU Extension restructured in 1990, Betty became Associate Vice Provost for Extension. She held this role until her retirement in September of 1991. Prior to coming to Iowa, Betty had Extension experience in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Kansas, her home state.

Iowans grew to appreciate Betty's emphasis on balanced and diverse programs. Her strengths included program development, evaluation, and
research/extension linkages. She has written many home economics publications and earned professional honors, including a creative programming award from the National University Continuing Education Association, Outstanding 4-H Alumna, and Distinguished Service Award from the Iowa Home Economics Association. She has held leadership responsibilities in numerous departmental, college and university groups, as well as in national organizations. She was not only an administrator but a friend to those with whom she worked, always showing an interest in the whole person, both the personal and professional aspects of their lives.

In addition to providing leadership in national and state programs in Extension, Betty has contributed her expertise internationally. She served as a Home Economics consultant for the Department of Rural Home Economics, Warsaw Agricultural University, Poland in 1979 and 1985, and in 1984, as a consultant for the Iowa Partners of the Americas in Yucatan addressing the roles and needs of women.

Betty is a member of the American and
Iowa Associations of Families and Consumer Sciences. She continues her public service through the Iowa Women's Political Caucus and the Ames, Gilbert, Nevada United Way Board.
