A young Viola Beckett, after graduating from high school in Rockford, Illinois, left the midwest and went to Los Angeles, California in 1927. She maintained a fierce independence during depression years and worked her way into significant executive secretarial jobs in the expanding warehouse industry. She never married until over 60 years old. At that time she married a widower. They lived happily until his death in 1993. She then went to a full care retirement community in Hemet, California.
At this writing, at 89 years old, she is
well and still fiercely independent.
