We, the daughters of Eunice Ustrud Vilmont, proudly present our Mother to be honored in the Plaza of Heroines as a heroine who commands love and respect from those who know and love her best. She is a sister of unique merit, of social consciousness and of progressive views. An extraordinary friend who approaches friendships with a spirit of responsibility, loyalty and dedication. Her tolerance and discernment serve as an example of impartial acceptance of diversity to those around her. Eunice Ustrud Vilmont was raised in a stimulating academic environment, unique to her times. Her precocity was expressed in her educational achievements and musical talents. She excelled in voice and violin, performing solos and in recitals, and participating in choral and instrumental groups as a youth and throughout her adulthood. Her accomplishments extended to playing in the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra, directing choral groups, and supporting music education and the music arts. She possesses an unselfish commitment to her family. Faced with the heart-wrenching, untimely deaths of both her beloved husband and father, she quickly put aside her personal grieving to accept family responsibilities for her daughters and her ailing mother and brother. Thus, she became both the single parent of the future and the matriarch of the extended family of the past, balancing these two distinct roles with grace and dignity. Our Mother is blessed with the rare ability to share in the youthful exuberance of her adoring grandchildren, epitomizing the spirit of Christian renewal. This spirit of renewal and faith finds further expression in her marriage to Homer Vilmont in the autumn of their lives. Eunice Ustrud Vilmont embodies the traits of a heroine; bravery and nobility. We, her daughters, thank her for instilling in us, as women, the importance of curiosity, independence, tolerance and individuality. She is our heroine. We are proud to be her legacy.
