Carolyn C. James is one of our country's most promising young academics. She currently is an instructor in the Department of Political Science at Iowa State University. Carolyn is a doctoral candidate at the University of Cincinnati and expects to complete her degree later this year.
Even at such an early stage of her career, Carolyn has received numerous honors for academic achievement. A recent example is the Taft Fellowship, which she held in 1995-96. Carolyn is the first woman in the field of international security studies to receive that award. This is typical of her pathbreaking role in a field that is almost entirely male in composition. Even very distinguished senior professors in the field recognize Carolyn's special abilities and invite her to specialized conferences on civil-military relations, an important area of interdisciplinary research.
Carolyn also is one of the leaders within the Women in International Security (WISE), which meets regularly as part of the International Studies Association (ISA). She is actively involved in publishing and coordinating with other women in the field, to promote their representation in ISA, the principle outlet for scholarly research on international relations around the world.
Carolyn presents papers at professional conferences on a regular basis. She is highly sought after to participate in panels and discussion groups; the latest example is an invitation to present a paper in Seoul later this year as part of the program for the International Political Science Association.
Later this year, International issues will publish the first of what is certain to be many articles in the career of Carolyn C. James. This journal reaches a wide audience of scholars and people with a general interest in international relations. Carolyn's contribution will be to explain the international aspects of ethnic conflict, with special attention to the Middle East.
Carolyn also is a wife and mother. She is a role model for women in professional life and already has helped many students in and out of the classroom. Carolyn's abilities in so many areas make her a perfect choice for the Plaza of Heroines. 2/17/97 |
