Born 1/12/1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota Died 10/11/1999 in Charles City, Iowa Rose Basuk Fleming was born in Charles City, Iowa, to immigrant parents from Russia. Although growing up in Iowa as a daughter of Jewish immigrants was certainly a challenge, her family was quite respected in Charles City. Her father, Oskel, was a successful businessman there. Rose graduated from Charles City High School and on August 11, 1948, she and Gilbert "Skip" Fleming were married in Chicago. They became the parents of three sons, Jerry, Jon and Jim. Her professional career included administrative secretarial positions for Doctor Joseph Salsbury at Salsbury Laboratories and later in her life at a local nursing home. Although she was dedicated to these jobs, Rose's life truly revolved around her immediate and extended family. She was the consummate Jewish mother! Rose was deeply involved in her sons' academic and professional activities, always stressing the importance of higher education. The results of these efforts, all three sons receiving Bachelor of Science degrees from Iowa State University and subsequently advanced degrees in Medicine. This made her very proud! In addition to spending time with her husband and her children and their families, her other pleasures in life were playing bridge and "having lunch with the ladies" on Saturdays. Rose died at the age of 81 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease. 8/31/2000
