Ruth Mandel, Mary Louise Smith Chair 1997-1998
Ruth B. Mandel is the Director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics and Board of Governors Professor of Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. From 1971 through 1994, Mandel served as Director of Eagleton's Center for the American Woman and Politics (CAWP), where she remains affiliated as a Senior Scholar. Mandel writes and speaks widely about women and leadership, with particular emphasis on women as political candidates, women in office, women's political networks, and the "gender gap." She teaches courses on women and American politics and political leadership. As an observer and analyst of emerging trends in leadership, Mandel appears frequently on radio and television. She is the author of In the Running: The New Woman Candidate (Beacon Press, 1983).
Since 1991, Mandel has been a member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, the governing body of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. She was named Vice Chairperson of the board by President Clinton in May 1993.
As the second Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics, Mandel visited Iowa State University October 6-7, 1997. During this visit, she presented a public lecture on Incrementalism vs. the Ketchup Bottle: Women's Progress in Politics, led a Symposium on Women and Leadership, spoke to several student classes as well as the Ames Rotary Club. Mandel made a second visit to ISU April 5-7, 1998 when she presented "Moving Forward Together: A Women's Political Movement" and led the showing and discussion of her 1984 documentary "Not One of the Boys."
The Eagleton Institute of Politics was established in 1956. It has a national reputation for its education, research, and public service activities in the field of American politics. It houses two majors centers--the Center for the American Woman and Politics and the Center for Public Interest Polling--and sponsors programs about American politics and the political process. |
