Pauline Hruska Carberry

Fort Dodge, IA

Brick Section C - Row 8

My grandmother, Pauline M. Carberry, the daughter of 2nd generation Czech immigrants, is my heroine. Tragically widowed with 3 adolescent sons, she returned to teaching, learned to drive, and even ran for County office. When teachers were required to have a college degrees, she commuted 2 hours each way on nights, weekends and during the summers to complete her bachelor's degree when she was over 50 years old. Her eldest son entered religious life and her two younger sons completed doctorates. She has set quite an example for all of her 9 grandchildren.
