Harriet Nelson

Ames, Iowa

Brick Section C - Row 9

My father, John I. Nelson, an Ames business man, died in 1929 at the very early age of 39. He had been an avid sports fan and supporter of Iowa State College atheletes. This strong interest carried over to my mother, Harriet E. Nelson, who was left with two daughters, Dorothy and Barbara to raise and educate.

Through the "Great Depression" years of the thirties she was able to support her family by becoming the legal secretary to the Assistant Attorney General for the State of Iowa. This position was assigned to the Iowa State
Highway Commission in Ames.

Politics dictated many changes in this office. My mother was able to maintain wonderful continuity as they occurred. She retired in 1954.

Both daughters received their Bachelor of Science degrees from Iowa State College.

Harriet E. Nelson was a wonderful mother of two and grandmother of six. 5/24/94
