Margery Ann Maberry Gilmor is the daughter of the late Buell George Maberry and Sallie Maberry and grew up in Amarillo, Texas. She graduated from High School at 16 and went on to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder from 1940 to 1943, majoring in Medical Technology. In 1946 she married Fred Howard Gilmor from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and moved to Ames, Iowa. In Ames she was employed by the University Health Department, while her husband completed a degree in General Engineering. There first daugther, Jane Ellen, was born in Ames in 1947. In 1950 the family moved to Waterloo, Iowa where Margery worked part-time as a medical technologist for the American Red Cross for thirty years. Their second daughter Ann Elizabeth was born there in 1951. She is currently retired and living with her husband Fred in Waterloo, Iowa. She writes fascinating travel diaries and enjoys birdwatching. doing crossword puzzles, sewing and reading. I honor her not only because she is my mother, but because after twenty years of teaching at the University level, she is still my most important role model as an educator. Her lifelong interest and quest for knowledge in all areas have always been an inspiration to me. She has also shown me that a sense of humor and an open mind are essential in life. 7/13/94 |
