Johnie Wright Hammond

Native of Texas-most of her adult life was spent in Ames, Iowa.

Brick Section B - Row 19

I believe that Johnie Hammond has had a life long commitment to service to others. She is the wife of an ISU professor and the mother of four children. While her children were young, she served in many volunteer jobs; in her church, her neighborhood and in seeking better opportunities for the less privileged in the community, especially single mothers with young children.

As her own children matured, she assumed more active roles of public service. She served on the Story County Board of Supervisors, and as representative in the
State Legislature. In 1994 she was elected to the Senate of Iowa.

She works with vigor and conviction in the interests of citizens who are not often well represented. She has great knowledge, and a deep concern for basic human services and has been a strong representative for improvement in health services and education. She is open to the voices of the people that she represents and is honorable in dealing with them as well as with her colleagues.

I believe that she greatly deserves to be honored in the Plaza of Heroines 12/14/94
