Hector Avalos Current Research
I have just published the first single-volume textbook ever published on The
U.S. Latina and Latino Religious Experience (Boston/Leiden, Brill, 2004).
The textbook covers Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, Dominicans,
and Central Americans, as well as broader themes such as the role of Art, Film,
Health Care, Literature, Music, Politics, and Women in the Latino/a religious
experience.
The book is part of the new book series for which I serve as General Editor.
Titled, Religion in the Americas, the book series publishes books on
all aspects of the religion of Spanish-speaking peoples from the tip of South
America to Canada. See our web site: www.brill.nl/m_catalogue_sub6_id11216.htm
Another book manuscript, Strangers in Our Own Land: Religion in U.S. Latina/o
Literature, was published in 2005 by Abingdon Press. It treats the attitudes
toward religion and specific religious traditions (e.g., Catholicism, Protestantism,
indigenous religions) found in the novels of Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans,
Cuban Americans, and Dominicans.
Otherwise, I continue my research into ancient health care and biblical studies.
My latest book, Fighting Words: The Origins of Religious Violence,
features a new theory for the relationship between religion and violence.
