Outdoor campus concert, student contest part of
Liberal Arts and Sciences' 50th anniversary celebration in 2009

AMES, Iowa - An August outdoor concert on the Iowa State University campus and a student contest are planned as part of ISU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' 50th anniversary celebration in 2009.

The ISU Wind Ensemble will perform on Central Campus south of the Campanile on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m. during the first week of fall classes. The Wind Ensemble, directed by Michael Golemo, professor and chair of music, is the top concert band at Iowa State.

Billed as the "Concert on the Green," the free performance will feature a wide variety of music. Jonathan Sturm, concertmaster of the Des Moines Symphony and an associate professor of music at ISU, will be the guest violin soloist.

"This will be a fun and enjoyable concert," Golemo said. "We're planning it as an old-fashioned type of performance with different styles of music including some favorites from 1959."

The LAS-sponsored student contest is asking students to tell the college how their Liberal Arts and Sciences education has impacted them and how it will impact the future. All ISU students take courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Categories for the contest include video and animation, writing and mixed media. Scholarship awards will be given to first and second place in each category and one "Best of Show" prize will be awarded. Submissions are not due until Nov. 2 to give students time to develop and create their entries.

Although Iowa State has had liberal arts courses since the university opened, LAS' predecessor, the College of Sciences and Humanities, was formed in 1959. The college changed to its present name in 1990.
