The performance is free of charge and open to everyone. Concertgoers are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets because only a few chairs will be available. The concert will capture the feel of a traditional, old-fashioned outdoor concert with an assortment of upbeat musical styles played in the shadow of the Campanile. “We’ll play a host of popular Broadway and movie selections from 1959 in addition to current selections and even some light classical music,” said Michael Golemo, professor and chair of music at ISU and conductor of the Wind Ensemble, the top concert band at the university. The performance features Jonathan Sturm as the guest violin soloist. Sturm is the concertmaster of the Des Moines Symphony and an associate professor of music at ISU. Michael Whiteford, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will be a guest conductor on one number. “This will be a fun, fast-paced and enjoyable concert,” Golemo said. Liberal Arts and Sciences is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a college in 2009. LAS was formed as the College of Sciences and Humanities in 1959 and changed to its present name in 1990. Iowa State, however, has been offering liberal arts, science and humanities courses since the institution opened in 1869.
