    RANKED NATIONALLY
    Several academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have been ranked among the best graduate programs in the United States by U.S. News and World Report magazine. The Department of Statistics is the top ranked department at Iowa State, fifth overall and third among public institutions.

    FIRST AMENDMENT DAY
    The 2008 First Amendment Day, sponsored in part by the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, will take place Wednesday and Thursday, April 9-10. The annual "Feast on the First" event is Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and features food sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and soapbox debates.

    NEW LAS STUDY ABROAD PROCEDURES
    The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has instituted new study abroad program proposal approval procedures. Faculty who are planning or proposing a group study abroad program for students must obtain approval from their academic unit and the college before the proposal can be reviewed by the ISU Study Abroad and Exchange Advisory Committee. Instructions and deadlines are available on-line.

    FRENCH OPEN HOUSE
    The students of French 304 (French for Business and Professions) will host an open house Tuesday, April 1, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on third floor Pearson Hall. The event will feature student-designed brochures and student-run information tables sharing details about various aspects of the French program and related opportunities. Representatives from related programs including the Study Abroad Center, Engineering International Programs and Services and the Peace Corps will also be in attendance.

    BLOOD DRIVE
    Iowa State's spring 2008 blood drive will be held March 31 to April 3 in the Memorial Union. To increase faculty/staff involvement, "VIP treatment" will be given, allowing faculty and staff to move to the front of the line when donating. Additional information on how faculty members can get involved with the blood drive is available on-line.

    ADVANCE WORKSHOP
    The ISU ADVANCE Program is sponsoring the "ADVANCE Collaborative Transformation Synthesis Report Workshop" Tuesday, April 1, in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union from noon to 2 p.m. The workshop will focus on an overview of the overall ADVANCE project goal to enable and support recruitment and retention of a diverse, highly qualified and cohesive faculty. Individuals who would like to reserve a lunch should RSVP by March 25 to advance@iastate.edu.

    ADVANCE LECTURESHIP
    The ISU ADVANCE Program will support and partner with departments, centers and other Iowa State units that support lectures, seminars and colloquia for the 2008-09 academic year. Support is available for departments to bring to campus outstanding speakers in the STEM fields with ten $300 awards available. The deadline for proposals is April 15.

    ARTS
    Back-to-back concerts in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall will take place Wednesday and Thursday, April 2-3. The ISU Clarinet Choir will perform Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. followed the next evening at 7:30 p.m. by the ISU Flute Studio.
