    LINGUISTICS DEPARTMENT?
    An exploratory committee has been established within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to look at the creation of a new academic department within the college. The committee will investigate the feasibility of a new Department of Applied Linguistics. Academic programs associated with the new department are currently housed primarily in the Department of English.

    INTERNATIONAL AWARDS
    The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognized international activities by its faculty, staff and students during its annual international dinner on Tuesday, April 1. Five individuals were specifically honored for their international work including Eric Abbott, professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication; Nancy Guthrie, program coordinator in the Study Abroad Center; and students Carrie Carlson, a senior in anthropology and German; Jessica Maves, a senior in political science and international studies; and Kim Rogers, a graduate student in creative writing and the environment.

    FIRST AMENDMENT DAY
    The 2008 First Amendment Day, sponsored in part by the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, will take place Wednesday and Thursday, April 9-10. The annual "Feast on the First" event is Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and features food sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and soapbox debates.

    VEISHEA
    The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will have an active presence during VEISHEA. Thursday's (April 10) activities on Central Campus will be sponsored by the College and LAS will have two large tents on Central Campus Saturday, April 12. Saturday activities will include performances by the GROOVE drumline and the ISU Pep Band and a 2008 presidential "mock election" sponsored by the Catt Center for Women and Politics and the Department of Political Science. 

    FACULTY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
    The fourth and final faculty workshop sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will be held Wednesday, April 16. "Maintaining Excellence Beyond P&T" will be held in the Gallery of the Memorial Union from 3-5 p.m. Interested faculty may register by e-mailing Laura Engelson at lge@iastate.edu.

    BAMBOOZLED BOTANIST
    Lynn Clark, professor of ecology, evolution and organismal biology, will speak on her experiences identifying species of bamboo in Central and South America during "Confessions of a Bamboozled Botanist" Thursday, April 17, at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Clark's address is the spring LAS Dean's Lecture Series.

    ADVANCE LECTURESHIP
    The ISU ADVANCE Program will support and partner with departments, centers and other Iowa State units that support lectures, seminars and colloquia for the 2008-09 academic year. Support is available for departments to bring to campus outstanding speakers in the STEM fields with ten $300 awards available. The deadline for proposals is April 15.

    ARTS
    ISU Theatre will present the annual Stars Over VEISHEA production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" beginning Friday, April 11. The Broadway musical comedy will be held in Fisher Theater at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday.
