    AWARDS
    The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is honoring 36 faculty and staff with awards for their accomplishments. The recipients will be formally recognized Sept. 3, 2008, during the LAS Faculty-Staff Convocation.

    NEW CHAIR
    Wolfgang Kliemann, professor of mathematics, has been named chair of the Department of Mathematics effective July 1, 2008. He replaces Justin Peters who has completed his term and will return to the faculty.

    GRADUATION
    The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host its May 2008 Graduation ceremony in Hilton Coliseum Friday, May 9, at 8 p.m. with speakers Steffen Schmidt, University Professor of political science, and psychology and political science graduating senior Chris Rieser. A reception for graduates and their guests will be held immediately afterwards. Students planning to participate in a ceremony should fill out a Student Attendance Card available on-line at www.las.iastate.edu/students/graduation/instructions.shtml and return it to Dave Gieseke, dgieseke@iastate.edu.

    TURKISH JOURNEY
    College of Liberal Arts and Science faculty and graduate students showing exceptional promise are invited to attend informational sessions on cultural trips to Turkey offered this summer. The trip is aimed at those professionals with an academic interest in multicultural studies, anthropology, sociology, philosophy or religious studies but it is not limited to those fields. The trip is July 11-20 and costs in Turkey are largely covered by an intercultural non-profit called the Iowa Dialog Center. Approximate costs, previous faculty testimonials and other questions will be answered at informational sessions scheduled for Monday, May 5 (4 p.m., 253 Catt Hall) and Wednesday, May 7 (4:30 p.m., 8 Curtiss Hall).

    OFFICE HOURS
    The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Dean's Office will observe flex hours during the summer months. The Catt Hall office will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, from May 12 through Aug. 15.

    SUMMER SCHEDULE
    Around LAS On-Line will begin its summer publication schedule with its next issue. The e-newsletter will be published every two weeks during the summer beginning Monday, May 19.

    SCIENCE AND SOCIETY MINI GRANT
    The Institute of Science and Society is accepting applications for their “mini grants.” These grants provide “seed money” for developing interdisciplinary research proposals or interdisciplinary workshops that ultimately lead to proposals to evaluate the environmental, economic, social and policy implications of bioeconomy expansion.
