October 29, 2008Russian guest conductor Feldman to conduct Central Iowa Symphony and ISU OrchestraMaestro Arkadiy Feldman, conductor and Artist Director of the Kaliningrad (Russia) Symphony Orchestra, will conduct two orchestral concerts in Ames during the first week in November. Both Concerts will feature all-Russian programs. Feldman will conduct the Central Iowa Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in Ames City Hall Auditorium. Pianist William David will be the featured soloist in a performance of the Second Piano Concerto by Dimitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). The program will also include the Waltz-Fantasy by Mikail Glinka (1801-1857) and Symphony No.1 by Vasilli Kalinikov (1866-1901). Tickets are available at the door before the performance. The second appearance by Feldman will be with the ISU Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall. He will conduct the well-known symphonic suite Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908). Ruth Lin, Director of Orchestral Activities at ISU will also conduct the Romeo and Juliette Overture by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Admission is $5 for adults and free to students. Tickets available at the door. Feldman is a long-time colleague and friend of ISU composer Jeffrey Prater. Since 1999 Feldman has conducted numerous performances of Prater’s orchestral works with the Kaliningrad Symphony, as well as a major performance of Prater’s oratorio Veni Creator Spiritus in 2007 with American soloists, the Saratov Governor’s Theater Chorus and the Saratov Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, Prater was commissioned to compose a concert overture for the twentieth anniversary of the Kaliningrad Orchestra. This work entitled A Russian Overture was premiered by Feldman and the KSO in October 2007, and was performed again in September 2008 at a concert commemorating the 675th anniversary of the Koenigsberg Cathedral located in Kaliningrad. Feldman’s visit to Ames is sponsored by the Central Iowa Symphony and the ISU Department of Music, with generous support from the Alvin Edgar Fund for the Performing Arts at the Iowa State Foundation. Feldman will be in residency in Ames from Oct. 27-Nov. 11. The public is invited to attend these events. | ||
