MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Greetings. It is my pleasure to add to the chorus of "Welcomes" that you've received over the past two weeks. For those of you who are joining us for the first time, I hope you find that Iowa State University meets all of your expectations. You are fortunate to be joining a community of great students, faculty and staff. I hope you find this place to be as exciting, challenging, fun and rewarding as have thousands who preceded you. We are here to contribute to all of those factors just listed. As teachers, administrators, and support staff, we want to see you succeed. Please do not hesitate to touch bases with us in order to ensure success.
To those coming back to Iowa State, I hope your summer was a good one. Some of you are returning from summer jobs, internships, studying or traveling abroad. You return with an accumulation of experiences that will add vitality to your courses and help to make this institution a more dynamic and interesting place. Welcome back.
Let me close by wishing all of you success this year. It should be a great one for all of us.

MAJOR FAIR
Looking to select or maybe change your current major? Looking to add a minor to your course of study? The second annual Major Fair hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences can provide you with the information to make those decisions. Academic units from throughout campus will be in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union, Monday, September 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CAREER SERVICES OPEN HOUSE
The Office of Career Services in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host an open house Wednesday, September 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in 351 Catt Hall. Food, beverages and prizes will be provided.
PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN WORKERS
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is looking to highlight students working on presidential campaigns this fall in a series of publications for prospective students as well as general news articles. If you are volunteering, interning or assisting in a campaign, please contact Dave Gieseke, director of communications, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, dgieseke@iastate.edu. Please include your name, major, year in school and candidate working for.
LAS COUNCIL
The LAS Student Council meets every two weeks on Wednesdays beginning at 5:10 p.m. in 205 Bessey Hall. The next meeting is September 12. Julie Neppl, a senior economics major, is the president of the 2007-08 LAS Student Council.

BORLAUG LECTURESHIP POSTER COMPETITION
The Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Human Sciences is sponsoring the sixth annual Norman Borlaug Lectureship Poster Competition for graduate and undergraduate students. Students are encouraged to enter poster abstracts in the general area of world food issues. Poster title and an abstract or summary (250 word limit) may be submitted to Patricia Murphy (pmurphy@iastate.edu) by Friday, September 21. Abstracts should contain hypothesis and objectives of project, methods, results, discussion of results, conclusion and relationship of poster to world food issues.
The competition will be held prior to the 2007 Norman Borlaug Lecture on Monday, Oct. 15.
LECTURES
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and its academic departments will host a series of lectures and special performances this fall on such topics as the Iowa Caucuses, the future of Planet Earth and the physics of baseball. Presenters include Frederick W. Smith, CEO of Federal Express, Christine Romans, CNN correspondent and Iowa State journalism graduate, and numerous LAS faculty.

ARTS
ISU Theatre has announced its 2007 fall season with productions of Chekhov's "Three Sisters," the satire "We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay!," and a special ISU sesquicentennial productions of the musical "Quilters."

The Department of Music will hold its "Fanfare Concert" Friday, September 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall. The program will feature brass, woodwind, vocal, organ, piano, harpsichord and percussion performances by departmental faculty members. Tickets are $20 with all proceeds benefiting the department’s student scholarship fund.
