GRADUATION
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will hold its Fall 2007 graduation ceremony Friday, December 14, at 8 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. This cap and gown ceremony will include the individual recognition of every LAS graduate in attendance.

COLLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
The application deadline for scholarships in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for the 2008 fall semester is February 15, 2008. Details on how to apply for the scholarships as well as criteria and descriptions of the scholarships are available on-line.

CAUCUS WORKSHOP
The Catt Center for Women and Politics will host an educational caucus workshop Tuesday, November 13, from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. The workshop will show students and others how they can be active caucus participants.

PHYSICS OF BASEBALL
The World Series is over but Eli Rosenberg, professor and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, will discuss America's past-time during the LAS Dean's Lecture Series Wednesday, November 14, at 8 p.m. in the Union's Sun Room. In his presentation, "The Physics of Baseball," Rosenberg will explore what makes a ball curve, why foul balls occur and why the ball goes further off of aluminum bats.

SECOND LIFE
"A Second Look at Second Life," a symposium on the 3-D virtual world will be sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and will be held Thursday, November 15, at 7 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. LAS Dean Michael Whiteford will host and serve as moderator of the panel discussion.

FRONTIERS OF THE DISCIPLINE
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will once again offer first-year students an opportunity to enroll in a "Frontiers of the Discipline" (LAS 103X) seminar during the 2008 spring semester. These seminars focus entirely on the research activities of faculty members and include "Humor and Russian Culture," "Stem Cell Research: Biology, Ethics and Politics," "Religious Games and Toys in the Classroom," "Music from Virtual Reality," "Language Learning with Podcasts," and "Is Jon Stewart Right? Are There no ‘Honest Debates'?"

GREAT CHALLENGES
Freshmen and sophomores can enroll in a spring 2008 Great Challenges seminar: "Global Warming LAS 121X." Enrollment is limited to 19 students. The seminar's goal is for students to become better-educated citizens and to develop plans (local to national scale) to help solve one of the pressing issues of our future.

REGIONAL BEST
For the fourth time in five years, the Iowa State Army ROTC Ranger Challenge Team won the annual Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition, defeating 18 squads from 10 different schools from throughout the Midwest.

REGIONAL BEST – TAKE 2
A team of three Iowa State computer science majors defeated 40 other collegiate computer programming teams at the 32nd ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Saturday, November 3. The team of Pavel Kazatsker, Michael Seibert and Kirk Sykora now hope to qualify for the world championships held in Canada this April.

COSTA RICA STUDY ABROAD
The Department of Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology is hosting a spring break field research experience in Costa Rica, exposing Iowa State students to field research and cultural experiences in a lowland tropical rainforest. The estimate cost is $1370.
