First Amendment Day activities to hit Iowa State campus
The 2008 First Amendment Day will take place on the Iowa State University campus Wednesday and Thursday, April 9-10. Activities will feature discussions on censoring freedom, the First Amendment after 9/11 and the state of the press.
The event will be highlighted by a "Freedom March" on Thursday from Ames City Hall to Central Campus. Afterwards food and music will be provided along with soapbox debates and exhibits on the First Amendment.
Mark Goodman, professor of journalism at Kent State University, will give the keynote address speaking on "Censoring Freedom: How the Quest for Security is Trumping Your Constitutional Rights" at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10. The lecture will be held in the Memorial Union's Sun Room.

Started in 2003, First Amendment Day serves as a celebration and a reminder of the five freedoms granted to the American people in the Constitution. These freedoms form the cornerstone of our democracy, which include the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.
