Heidi Germann, the student director of the upcoming Iowa State University Theatre production, has made it a point not to see "Anton in Show Business."
The Storm Lake senior didn't go to Iowa City when her grandmother recently saw a production at the University of Iowa. Nor did she attend with a friend at a similar presentation in St. Paul, Minn.
"I want the show to have my own stamp on it - that it be my own take," Germann said. "If I was to go see the show no matter how much I would said it wouldn't affect my production, it would.
"I want this to be my work and our actors' work."
ISU Theatre-goers will have the opportunity to see Germann's production of "Anton in Show Business" when the student-produced show is presented March 27-30 in the Maintenance Shop located in the Memorial Union.
"Anton in Show Business" is a madcap comedy that follows three actresses pursuing their dream of performing Chekhov's "Three Sisters" at a regional theatre in San Antonio, Tex. They are whisked through a maelstrom of "good ideas" that offer unique solutions to the Three Sisters' need to have life's deeper purpose revealed.
The show is the 2001 winner of the American Theatre Critics' Steinberg New Play Award for playwright Jane Martin.
"The show is basically a huge parody of American show business with a lot of one-liners," Germann says. "I want people to come to the theatre and feel happy and this show definitely gets that done.
"I first read the script a year ago and I was sitting in the library laughing out loud it's so wild and funny."
Members of the cast include Bree Cobb, Suzanne Peterson, Kim Chelf, Erica Neilsen, Lindsay Allen, Alexis Kline and Justine Year. Production team members in addition to Germann are Nick Juelsgaard, scenic designer; Amanda Mullen, costume designer; Will Dean, lighting designer; and Jason Pollard, stage manager.
"Anton in Show Business" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 27-29 with a 2 p.m. matinee set for Sunday, March 30.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and are available at the M-Shop during the day and at the door.
