Bratsch-Prince named College of Liberal Arts and Sciences associate dean

  • Dawn Bratsch-Prince, who has served as chair of Iowa State University's Department of World Languages and Cultures since 2002, has been named an associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

In her new role, the professor of Spanish will have special emphasis in overseeing international programs, study abroad, distance and online education, student recruitment and faculty orientation in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She will also serve as the LAS liaison for several college and university-wide committees.

A member of the Iowa State faculty since 1990, Bratsch-Prince has also served as an intern associate dean in LAS for the past year and a half. Some of her intern duties have included developing the college's international efforts, streamlining the faculty/staff awards nomination process and organizing a series of faculty development workshops.

As chair of the Department of World Languages and Cultures, Bratsch-Prince has led a realignment of the department's mission and broadened its emphasis to better serve the growing audience of students who seek credentials in another language and culture. She has been instrumental in the development of a second major in languages and cultures for the professions, the establishment of student internships, the formal renaming of the department, and the creation of a new major in world languages and cultures.

In 2005, she received the college award for Outstanding Departmental Leadership, followed by the university award the next year. The Iowa World Language Association named her Post-Secondary Educator of the Year for 2006 in recognition of her work on articulation and advocacy in world language education. She was recently elected to the executive committee of the MLA's Association of Departments of Foreign Languages.

Prior to becoming chair of the department, Bratsch-Prince served as the department's assistant chair fro 1997-2000. The Spanish professor has also served as the chair of the cross-disciplinary program in linguistics (1996-97) and as the assistant director of the Iowa Regents' Summer Program in Valladolid, Spain (1992).

Her research interests in medieval Iberian students are broad. Her first book was an edition and study of the Aragonese translation Li livres dou tresor, Brunetto Latini's popular 13th century encyclopedia. Her second book, Vida y epistolario de violante de Bar (1365-1431), treats the life and writings of Violante de Bar, a French noblewoman who became an influential queen of Aragon. She has published articles on historical linguistics, medieval translation, women's writings, the politics of marriage and motherhood, and canon formation. In addition to her work in medieval studies, Bratsch-Prince has a keen interest in promoting foreign language study across educational levels and traditional disciplinary boundaries.

Bratsch-Prince is a native of Brooklyn, who spent two years living and studying in Madrid, Spain. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in Spanish from New York University. She has a doctoral degree in Romance Philology from the University of California at Berkeley.
