New home in Carver Hall
LAS programs move into renovated spaces.
- For some faculty, staff and programs in the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences (LAS), the fall semester begins in a new home.
For many, that means a permanent location with the completion of the $2
million renovation of Carver Hall. Other academic departments however aren't
nearly as lucky, as construction continues in Pearson Hall.
The Carver Hall work was completed in early May. Several programs affiliated
with LAS have moved their offices into the newly-renovated structure, which
became empty after the College of Business vacated Carver Hall when the
Gerdin Business Building was completed in December 2003.
"The new space in Carver Hall that the LAS departments and programs
have moved into is larger and/or better space than the facilities they were
previously housed in," said Doug Epperson, LAS associate dean. "This
is space that was desperately needed by many areas."
Areas that have moved into Carver Hall include the new Center for American
Intercultural Studies, which is located in 208 Carver. The Center consists
of the ethnic studies programs within LAS including American Indian Studies,
African American Studies, Asian American Studies and U.S. Latino/a Studies.
Each program has also moved into the suite of offices in 208 Carver.
It's a good move on several levels according to Eugenio Matibag, associate
professor of foreign languages and literatures and interim director of the
Center. Previously the programs did not share a central office location.
"The Center and the new office creates a visible identity for the discipline
of U.S. ethnic studies," Matibag said. "Now we have one home for professors,
students and staff to come to and discuss ethnicity in American society."
The Institute of Science and Society and its director Yong Lee, professor
of political science, are equally excited about their new space in Carver.
"We really didn't have an office last year, so this is a good deal
more space for us," Lee said. "I think the location in Carver
will make more people aware of the Institute and what it does."
The Institute has moved from cramped quarters in Ross Hall to 129 and 131
Carver Hall. The Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities has moved
to 171 Carver from Beardshear Hall. The LAS Center for On-Line Learning
has moved into the building's basement.
Other renovated space in Carver Hall has been occupied by the Department
of Psychology and Department of English. This is "satellite" space
for these departments with the main departmental and faculty offices remaining
in Lagomarcino (psychology) and Ross Hall (English).
The Department of Mathematics has acquired additional faculty offices on
the third floor as a complement to its previous fourth floor office. The
main office for mathematics has moved from fourth floor to third floor as
part of the renovations.
While the Carver renovations have been completed, work has begun on the
second phase of renovations to Pearson Hall including work to the Department
of Foreign Languages and Literatures' resource center and ISU Theatre's
rehearsal studio.
Faculty from both departments have been relocated to the building's basement
during the renovation process, which is anticipated to be completed late
in the fall semester. The final phase of the Pearson renovation will then
begin to remodel and convert the basement space into five computer labs
for the Department of Computer Science and a design lab for ISU Theatre.
