Inaugural recipients of the Cassling Family Faculty Awards announced
Two faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
(LAS) at Iowa State University have been named the first recipients of the
Cassling Family Faculty Awards.
Eugenia Farrar, associate professor of ecology, evolution and organismal biology,
and Chad Gasta, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures,
were recognized at the LAS 2005 Teaching Award Ceremony on Monday, Oct. 10.
The Cassling Family Faculty Awards recognize and reward outstanding faculty
in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Two faculty members will receive
a $5000 award – one for outstanding teaching performance over an extended
period of time at Iowa State and one for early achievement in teaching.
The awards were established by Randal and Lori Cassling of Omaha, Neb, in
honor of Randal's parents, Robert and Rita Lenore Dunn Cassling of Omaha,
Neb. Robert Cassling is a 1956 graduate of Iowa State while Rita attended
Iowa State and was a former Homecoming queen.
Farrar has contributed enormously to teaching at Iowa State for more than
30 years. She uses a variety of formats for learning in the 14 different courses
she has taught to promote scientific literacy, cultural awareness and an integrated
understanding of how science relates to current issues. She consistently receives
the highest scores on student evaluations of any faculty member in the department
in introductory, advanced undergraduate and graduate-level courses.
Gasta has been a catalyst, at Iowa State and nationally, in adapting instructional
technology to the teaching and learning of foreign languages and literatures.
He is the director or coordinator of four study abroad programs, two of which
he created, and he has overseen a significant increase in the number of student
internships offered through the department in the three years he has been
internship coordinator.
