Two faculty members receive Cassling Family Faculty Awards for outstanding teaching

Two faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at Iowa State University have been named the latest recipients of the Cassling Family Faculty Awards.

James Andrews, associate professor of history, and Laura Mielke, assistant professor of English, were recognized at yesterday's (Wednesday, Sept. 6) LAS Fall Convocation.

The Cassling Family Faculty Awards recognize and reward outstanding faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Two faculty members will each receive a $5000 award - one for outstanding teaching performance over an extended period of time at Iowa State and one for early achievement in teaching.

The awards were established by Randal and Lori Cassling of Omaha, Neb, in honor of Randal's parents, Robert and Rita Lenore Dunn Cassling of Omaha, Neb. Robert Cassling is a 1956 graduate of Iowa State while Rita attended Iowa State and was a former Homecoming queen.

Mielke is an extraordinary knowledgeable scholar of American literature for whom the adventures of teaching and of learning are seamlessly and passionately joined. Her classes are challenging, rigorous and carefully prepared, though her teaching methods are also flexible and innovative. Students describe her as inspiring, and repeatedly commend her as a model for their own future teaching careers.

A seasoned classroom teacher of Russian and general European history, Andrews co-directs the Ph.D. program in the History of Technology and Science. He consistently receives among the highest evaluations in the Department of History in both the undergraduate courses in his specialty - Russian history - as well as in the introductory courses in European civilization. In order to combine European history expertise and his knowledge of the history of technology, Andrews spent a new designing a new course, "Technology, Public Science and European Culture, 1543-present," which has become a part of the department's permanent curriculum.
