Two College of LAS faculty members receive

Cassling Family Faculty Awards for outstanding teaching

Ames, Iowa - Two faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University have received Cassling Family Faculty Awards.

Dennis Chamberlin, assistant professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, and Mark Hargrove, professor of biochemistry and biophysics, were recognized at the 2009 Fall Convocation, Sept. 2.

The Cassling Family Faculty Awards recognize and reward outstanding faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The two faculty members will each receive a $5,000 award – one for outstanding teaching performance over an extended period of time at Iowa State and one for early achievement in teaching.

The awards were established by Randal and Lori Cassling of Omaha, Neb., in honor of Randal’s parents, Robert and Rita Lenore Dunn Cassling of Omaha, Neb. Robert Cassling is a 1956 graduate of Iowa State while Rita attended Iowa State and was a former Homecoming queen.

Chamberlin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, maintains a rigorous, challenging classroom environment. His courses earn standout evaluation scores from students because of his creative, innovative methods. An example was his study abroad course to Poland that led to the creation of a web site exposing Iowa State students to global perspectives and images through the lens. Chamberlin regularly enhances his teaching effectiveness with visits to newsrooms, seminars and conventions, and he uses that network to place his students in exciting internships.

Hargrove has been a faculty member at Iowa State University for the last 10 years. He teaches both biochemistry and biophysics in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB). His teaching skills are broad ranging and as such have influenced large numbers of students pursuing degrees in biochemistry and related sciences. His passion for teaching complex material to undergraduate students and his unending enthusiasm for classroom teaching are clearly evident in student feedback and from colleagues across campus who have either taken his courses or invite him regularly as a guest lecturer.
