Computer science department receives gift from Caterpillar
Foundation
The Department of Computer Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
has received a donation from the Caterpillar Foundation as part
of a larger gift to the Iowa State University Foundation.
The gift to the Department of Computer Science includes funding for
the computer science learning community, for the virtual computing environment in the department and
five scholarships.
Details of the individual projects include:
Learning community - The computer science learning community will
promote increased student engagement and learning through facilitating acclimation
to computer science, promote social and academic interaction between students
and faculty, and create an environment in which students feel a part of
the academic community as students make the transition from high school
to university life.
Scholarships - An undergraduate scholarship fund for five
undergraduate students will be established with three of the scholarships
designated for minority students. Each of the scholarships will be awarded
on high academic performance and contributions to the University community.
Virtual Computing Environment - The combination of Desktop
Terminal Server from Microsoft Windows, video classroom technology, and
recorded lectures will allow the Department of Computer Science to teach
computer science classes to majors both locally and remotely.
"With the Caterpillar funding, we will be able to give much-needed
funding to our computer science learning community and five scholarships
to our undergraduate students," said Carl Chang, professor and chair
of the Department of Computer Science. "The scholarship program established
by Caterpillar will result in a stronger pool of information technology
graduates entering the workforce in the information and knowledge-based
economy in the nation through research, technology transfer and education."
As part of the gift, Caterpillar Foundation also donated funds to the College
of Engineering and the College of Business at Iowa State.
