The Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University celebrated
the act of voting during a series of special events on Friday, Aug. 26,
on campus.
"Celebrate Voting," a joint initiative of the Catt Center,
Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver, Iowa State Historical Foundation,
Iowa Department of Human Rights, Iowa Civil Rights Commission, NAACP,
ID Action and League of Women Voters of Iowa, recognizes the 40th anniversary
of the Voting Rights Act, the 85th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment (women's
right to vote), and the current implementation of the Help America Vote
Act (HAVA).
The Catt Center is named after Carrie Chapman Catt, an Iowa State University
alumna and a leader in the passage of the 19th Amendment.
On Friday, the day was highlighted by a noon program featuring Iowa Secretary
of State Chet Culver and a performance of the one-woman show, "The
Yellow Rose of Suffrage," by ISU Theatre's Jane Cox. The excerpt
of her play depicts the life of Carrie Chapman Catt and the struggle for
women to win the right to vote in the early 20th century.
Also on Friday, the Catt Center staffed booths on campus, allowing individuals
the opportunity to register to vote or change their vote registration.
Earlier in August, a series of "Celebrate Voting" events were
held in Des Moines. Other events will be held this fall at Iowa State,
the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa to focus on
voting rights and responsibilities of women, youth, minority and new American
voters.
