Donation establishes lecture series in Greenlee School of Journalism and
Communication
Iowa State University graduates Margaret and Gene Chamberlin have funded a
new lecture series in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.
The Chamberlins have committed $10,000 a year starting in 2007 to bring to the
Iowa State campus each fall a journalist with a nationally recognized reputation
in news or advertising.
"We are grateful to the Chamberlins for making this generous gift which
will inform our students on both the national and local levels," said Michael
Bugeja, director of the Greenlee School. "We anticipate partnering with
the Iowa State Lecture Program to help promote the event, and students will
be involved in the planning as well."
In addition, the Greenlee School will work with the Iowa Newspaper Foundation
(INF) to select a professional from their membership to serve as the Chamberlin/INF
Fellow. The visiting fellow will visit journalism classes and confer with students
at the Iowa State Daily during the fall semester in conjunction with
the Chamberlin Lecture Series. The Fellow also will serve as official host to
the nationally known journalist invited to Ames as the Chamberlin Speaker.
The local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will help coordinate
the annual event. Also, the Iowa State Daily has agreed to be a cosponsor
of the lecture series.
"The Iowa State Daily is honored to participate with the Greenlee
School and the Chamberlins to bring nationally known journalists to Ames. We
appreciate the opportunity to have Daily students learn from some of the nation's
and state's finest journalists," said Annette Forbes, general manager of
the Iowa State Daily.
Jennifer Asa, director of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation, said, "The Chamberlin
Lecture Series will provide a wonderful opportunity to promote excellence in
print journalism."
Gene Chamberlin is a 1954 graduate of Iowa State with a major in agricultural
journalism. Margaret McFerran Chamberlin (Cole) is a 1955 general science graduate
of Iowa State. The Chamberlins are the retired publishers/owners of the Mobridge
Tribune in South Dakota.
The gift was made through the ISU Foundation, a private, non-profit corporation
dedicated to securing and managing gifts and grants that benefit Iowa State
University..
