  • Chemistry building receives final Regents approval

The new facility will be built adjacent to Gilman Hall.

  • The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approved the schematic design and budget ($74.5 million) for Iowa State University's new chemistry facility during its late October meeting. This gives the university the final green light to proceed with construction plans.

As approved, the "chemistry facilities building" will be constructed north of Davidson Hall, on the current site of the Industrial Education I building and an ag engineering shed and northwest of Gilman Hall, current home to the Department of Chemistry. Gilman will continue to hold general classrooms, classroom labs, offices and laboratories.

At 82,000 net square feet on four levels (one below ground for research sensitive to light and vibration), the building will house state-of-the-art classrooms, labs and equipment to support research and teaching in the Department of Chemistry.

The new chemistry building is being planned as a three-story, 135,000 square-foot facility. Groundbreaking is scheduled for May 2008 with an anticipated completion date of August 2010. The first floor will be dedicated to the undergraduate teaching laboratories and student interaction space. The second and third floors will be dedicated to existing biomedical researchers and vacant labs that will be used to recruit new faculty to Iowa State.

“The Department of Chemistry seeks to drive the frontiers of chemical science and biomedical research,” said Jacob Petrich, professor and chair of the chemistry department. “This new facility will be paramount in fulfilling the integration of world-class researchers with the most advanced laboratory spaces and analytical tools available. Science is a continuing revolution and the complex problems society faces require high quality researchers and inquisitive students who will push the frontiers of science. This caliber of talent is found at Iowa State.”

The building will be paid for with academic building revenue bonds sold by the Board of Regents ($53.9 million), private gifts and other funds totaling $15.6 million, and a $5 million state appropriation from last year to begin planning and hire architects.
