Presidential Lecture Series in Chemistry features National Laboratory deputy director
The 2008 Presidential Lecture in Chemistry at Iowa State University will feature the deputy director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Graham R. Fleming, who is also a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, will speak on "Photosynthesis and Solar Energy Conversion" Tuesday, March 25, at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union.
Fleming has been at the forefront of a major revolution in the biophysical sciences, leading investigations into ultrafast chemical and biological processes, in particular, the primary steps of photosynthesis. He holds degrees from the University of Bristol and the University of London.
Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Melbourne, Australia, Fleming joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1979. There, he rose through the academic ranks to become the Arthur Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor.
His ultimate goal is to develop artificial photosynthesis that would provide humanity with clean, efficient and sustainable energy.
This is the third annual Presidential Lecture in Chemistry.
