Computer science department celebrates 40th anniversary
Coinciding with the beginning of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Iowa State University, the Department of Computer Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will hold its own observance.
A yearlong celebration of the 40th anniversary (1968-2008) of the department will conclude Thursday and Friday, April 10-11.
Activities will begin on Thursday with the annual Robert Stewart Distinguished Lecture in Computer Science. Jin-Yi Cai of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will speak on "Computational Complexity and Holographic Algorithms" Thursday, April 10, at 3:30 in 1210 LeBaron. A reception will be held afterward in 223 Atanasoff Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
On Friday, the department will hold a distinguished alumni forum in B29 Atanasoff Hall from 1-4 p.m. An evening banquet is scheduled Friday evening beginning at 5 p.m. in the Scheman Building in the Iowa State Center. For more information on the banquet contact Jennifer Juehring, 515-294-7609.
Iowa State University is the birthplace of the world's first electronic digital computer built by John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. It incorporated several major innovations in computing including the use of binary arithmetic, regenerative memory, parallel processing and separation of memory and computing functions.
