Iowa State Daily named nation's best student newspaper

The Society of Professional Journalists has named the Iowa State Daily as the nation's top college newspaper.

Iowa State University's newspaper, affiliated with the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, received the award for college newspapers that publish at least four times a week. The award will be presented during the SPJ's National Journalism Conference in September in Atlanta.

The Daily was chosen from newspapers in 12 regions across the country.

This is the latest in a series of awards that the Iowa State Daily has received. The student publication earned both a Gold Crown and a Silver Crown award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The Gold Crown award was for the spring 2007 semester and the Silver Crown for the fall 2006 semester. Only four four-year daily collegiate newspapers were awarded Gold Crowns and only three received Silver Crowns.

Pat Shaver, a double major in journalism and mass communication and sociology, was the editor this past year of the Iowa State Daily.
