  • Simon Estes to present special Iowa State concert

  • Renowned international opera star Simon Estes will present a special concert at Iowa State University on Monday, March 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall.

Estes, the F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Artist in Residence, will sing a series of Mozart concert arias, spiritual and musical theater selections. The bass-baritone will be joined in the concert by Iowa State pianists Andrew Adams and Sue Haug.

The program will also feature music students Stephanie Kasper, Katy Argotsinger, Sarah Thompson and Elizabeth Neuerburg. The four sopranos will perform on a variety of selections.

In addition to the Mozart concert arias, Estes will sing such African-American spirituals as "Go Down Moses," "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit," and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child."

The musical theatre selections will include "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'," from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess; "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific; and "Without a Song" from Great Day by Youmans and Rose.

Tickets, which are available at the door, are $10 for adults while students are free. All proceeds will benefit Iowa State's Department of Music scholarship fund.

Individuals who purchased tickets to the Simon Estes Scholarship Musicale last semester will receive complimentary tickets to the March 28 concert.
