EVALUATING TEACHING
The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) will discuss how end-of-term course evaluations can help faculty assess how students are learning in a faculty forum, "Student Evaluation of Teaching" Tuesday, February 19, at 12:10 p.m. in the Memorial Union's Cardinal Room. The forum will look at how evaluations can serve as one measurement among many in evaluating an instructor's achievements in the classroom. Beverages and desserts will be provided.

EMERGING EXPLORER
Anthropologist Jill Pruetz has been selected as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer for 2008, in part for her world renowned research on savanna chimpanzees in Senegal. The 11 new Emerging Explorers are featured in the February issue of National Geographic magazine.

WILDNESS AND WILDERNESS
Lectures, music, panel discussions and readings highlight a three-day symposium at Iowa State that explores the creative imagination and the environment. “Earth/Animal/Oracle,” the fourth Annual Symposium on Wildness, Wilderness and the Creative Imagination, February 17-19, campus and in Ames. The event is sponsored by the MFA program in creative writing and environment in the Department of English.

INTERNATIONAL AWARD
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking nominations for the 2008 LAS Student International Excellence Award. This award recognizes outstanding students with majors in the college who have excelled in internationally-focused academic or extra-curricular activities. Nominations should be directed to Dave Gieseke, 223 Catt Hall, dgieseke@iastate.edu , by Monday, March 10. Internal Grants
The ISU Council on International Programs is accepting applications for its International Grants Program for 2008-09. The program funds individual and group projects led by faculty and staff to enhance the infusion of international perspectives into the learning, discovery and/or engagement activities of the university. Applications must be submitted to Penni Bryant at pabryant@iastate.edu by April 11. Please note that this is a change from previous years when applications were accepted in the fall.

TRAVEL AWARD
Iowa State's Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods is accepted applications for the Butler Travel Fellowship award of approximately $3000. Funds will be used to support graduate-level research in international sustainable agriculture or livelihoods. Applications are due February 25 at susrl@iastate.edu. Application details are on-line.

SUMMER INSTITUTE
The Computational and Systems Biology Summer Institute (CSBSI) will be held on campus this summer and includes a two-week short course in computational and systems biology. The course provides an intensive introduction to fundamental methods in computational and systems biology, describes applications to prominent research problems and discusses recent accomplishments in genomics and systems biology. The target audience is professionals in the biological sciences from academia to industry who wish to broaden their knowledge in bioinformatics and apply it to their current research.

CEAH SUMMER GRANT WRITING
The Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities will offer a pilot program this summer to assist faculty members in the arts and humanities with a written critique of the narrative and budget of an external grant proposal. Consultants will address a variety of questions including whether the proposal meets the grant guidelines and whether it is written clearly and persuasively for its intended audience. The deadline for submission for the program is Monday, April 7, when interested faculty should e-mail basic information on the proposal to snorvell@iastate.edu.

Ames Piano Quartet's George Work will perform with the ISU Symphony Orchestra during a special concert Friday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall in the Music Hall. Admission is free.
