    SPRING BREAK
    The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean's Office will observe flex hours during Spring Break. The office will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, March 17 through Friday, March 21. Around LAS On-Line will not be published the week of March 17-21.

    CHEMISTRY GIFT
    Kathyrn Hach Darrow of Mukilteo, Wash., has committed $10 million toward the construction of a new chemistry building on the Iowa State campus. Groundbreaking for the $74.5 million project is scheduled for September 2008 with an anticipated completion date of August 2010.

    DIRECTOR SEARCH
    Nominations and applications are being accepted for director of the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities (CEAH). Only ISU tenured faculty will be considered for the position. Current CEAH director Brenda Daly, University Professor of English, plans to retire on July 1. Applications are due to Gaye Simonson (gmsimon@iastate.edu) by March 24.

    NETWORKING WITH ADVANCE
    An ISU ADVANCE Networking Event: "Gender, Science & the Myths of Merit," a presentation by Marlene Zuk, associate vice provost for faculty equity and diversity at the University of California, Riverside, will be held on Thursday March 13, from noon to 1 p.m. in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union. Please bring your own lunch. Refreshments will be provided.

    BEST PRACTICES
    The third in a series of four faculty development workshops will be held Wednesday, March 12, from 3-5 p.m. in The Gallery of the Memorial Union. "Promotion and Tenure: Expectations and Best Practices" will cover such topics as portfolio preparation, "dos and don'ts" along the way, LAS P&T policy, and scholarly expectations.
            
    Faculty should RSVP by Friday, March 7, to lge@iastate.edu or 4-6426. Pre-tenure faculty can invite their faculty member to the event.

    SUMMER CHINESE
    The Department of World Languages and Cultures will offer Intensive Summer Chinese courses in 2008. The courses are designed for students who have no previous experience learning or speaking Chinese. When combined with coursework during the regular academic year, Iowa State's Summer Intensive Chinese courses provide a unique opportunity to accelerate the study of Chinese by enabling students to reach the proficiency level normally attained through two years of regular study in just 11 months.

    Chinese 101 will be offered May 19 to June 13 followed by Chinese 102 from June 16 to July 11. Space is limited to 15 students per section. For more information contact Lijun Shi (estone@iastate.edu) or 294-9973.
