Department of Music announces fall performances
- A special Homecoming concert featuring four prominent Iowa State University
music alumni will highlight the 2005 fall semester Department of Music activities.
The Homecoming performance will be Sunday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. in the Martha-Ellen
Tye Recital Hall. A highlight of that concert will be the premiere of a
new composition by composer and ISU alumnus Jay Kawarsky of Rider College.
Kawarsky's "Fastidious Notes" will be performed by the ISU Wind
Ensemble and will include a saxophone solo by another ISU music alumnus,
Paul Bro of Indiana State University.
Two other ISU music alumni, Wayne Bailey, director of the School of Music
at Arizona State University, and Alan Greiner, executive secretary of the
Iowa High School Music Association, will participate in the Homecoming concert.
This performance and most other Iowa State music events are free to the
public. Tickets for Department of Music activities in Stephens Auditorium
are available at the Iowa State Center Ticket office, all TicketMaster locations
or by calling 515-233-1888.
Other highlights of Iowa State's Department of Music's fall schedule include:
September
11 - Wind Faculty Chamber Music Recital, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall,
7:30 p.m. The wind faculty of Iowa State, flutist Sonja Giles, oboist Kevin
Schilling, and saxophonists Michael Giles and Michael Golemo will perform
a variety of works featuring the "winds of Iowa State."
16 - Mark Babcock, organ recital, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m.
The annual Organist of Iowa recital will feature virtuoso organist Mark
Babcock on the Music Hall's prestigious Brombaugh organ. Babcock is a professor
of organ at Central College and Dean of the Central Iowa Chapter of the
American Guild of Organists.
25 - Joseph Messenger, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. Displaying
the virtuosity of clarinet professor Joseph Messenger, this recital will
feature several "neglected' works for clarinet, including "Sonata
for Clarinet and Piano" by Theodore Gouvy.
October
8 - Naoko Takada, marimbist, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. Japanese
marimbist Naoko Takada won First Prize in the Young Concert Artist International
Auditions in 2002 and was also awarded the Beracasas Foundation Prize. She
first appeared as an orchestral soloist with the Tokyo Symphony and Tokyo
Chamber Orchestra at age 11 and has since appeared as a soloist with orchestras
around the world. Her 2004 season started with Paul Newman's Gala Event
where she shared the stage with Hollywood stars Bruce Willis, Meryl Streep,
Danny Glover and others. Takada will be on campus for a residence Oct. 4-8.
9 - Collage of Choirs, Stephens Auditorium, 3 p.m. Over 300 Iowa State singers
from four large choral ensembles will present the 26th annual Collage of
Choirs. The performance will feature the Iowa State Singers, Cantamus Women's
Choir, Iowa Statesmen Men's Choir, and Lyrica Women's Choir. All of these
choirs are well known for their exceptional musicality and spirited commitment
to singing. The Iowa State Singers were honored this past spring with a
performance at the American Choral Directors Association national convention
in Los Angeles. Admission will be charged.
14-15 - Lipa Music Festival, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall. This festival
celebrates the combination of music and technology. Featured will be internationally-renowned
guest artist Gerard Errante, who will be performing on the "E-clarinet
(electronic!)."
16 - Ames Piano Quartet, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. The fall
concert by the Ames Piano Quartet will include the great "C minor quartet"
by Brahms and a rarely heard quartet by British composer Herbert Howells.
Both works are powerful and Romantic in style and this evening promises
a wide range of expression and emotion.
November
10-11 - Opera Studio, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. The faculty
and students of the Department of Music will combine to present "Side
by Side by Sondeim." The production is a cabaret-like show, which features
some of composer Stephen Sondeim's best-known music. Admission will be charged.
13 - ISU Band Extravaganza, Stephens Auditorium, 3 p.m. The energy and excitement
of the Cyclone Marching Band indoors. The sweet sounds of the ISU Jazz Ensemble
. The musicianship of the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. All in one concert!
It's all part of an afternoon of unforgettable sights, sounds and spirit
with the ISU Band Extravaganza featuring musical compositions from the classics
to jazz. Admission will be charged.
December
3 - Piano Faculty Recital, Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall, 7:30 p.m. The
popular concert will feature the artistry of Department of Music faculty
members William David, Andrew Adams, Paula Forrest and May Tsao-Lim in a
variety of solo works and pieces for four and eight hands.
4 - ISU Holiday Choral Festival, Stephens Auditorium, 3 p.m. The annual
concert will feature the musical talents of four Iowa State choirs and the
Symphony Orchestra. The Iowa State Singers, the Iowa Statesmen, Cantamus,
Lyrica and the Symphony Orchestra will each perform individually, presenting
various holiday carols and other music befitting the season. The concert
will conclude with a massed choir performance of seasonal music with an
orchestra comprised of members of the ISU Symphony Orchestra. The audience
will be invited to join the singing of the carols during the concert. Admission
will be charged.
