Department of Music announces fall season

Each fall, Iowa State University's Department of Music schedules the "Collage of Choirs," the "Band Extravaganza" and the "ISU Holiday Festival." This fall is no different.

The three major concerts will again be held in Stephens Auditorium beginning Sunday, Oct. 5, with the 29th annual "Collage of Choirs" at 3 p.m. The performance features over 300 student choir members from the department's four large choral ensembles including the Iowa State Singers, Cantamus Women's Choir, Lyrica Women's Choir and the Statesmen.

International opera star Simon Estes will be featured at the annual "Band Extravaganza" performance Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Estes will sing with the ISU Wind Ensemble. Other instrumental ensembles scheduled to perform include the Cyclone Marching Band, the Symphonic Band, and the ISU Jazz Ensemble.

The last of the three major concert performances, the "ISU Holiday Festival," is set for Sunday, Dec. 7. The performance features the vocal talents of the four Iowa State choirs and the ISU Symphony Orchestra. The Iowa State Singers, the Statesmen, Cantamus, Lyrica and the ISU Symphony Orchestra will each perform individually, presenting various holiday carols and other music befitting the season. The concert will conclude with a massed choir performance of seasonal music with an orchestra comprised of members of the ISU Symphony Orchestra. The audience will be invited to join in the singing of carols during the concert.

Tickets are available for the "Collage of Choirs," "Band Extravaganza" and "ISU Holiday Festival" at all TicketMaster locations.

In addition to the major performances, a number of guest artists and faculty recitals are scheduled throughout the semester. The major instrumental and choral ensembles will also be featured throughout the fall, including a special performance Friday, Oct. 17, by the ISU Wind Ensemble and the ISU Percussion Ensemble.

"Our smaller ensembles are very successful," says Michael Golemo, associate professor of music and chair of the Department of Music. "By matching these two groups together we can show off the strengths of our smaller ensembles."

A majority of these performances are free and will be held in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall.
