Farmscape production features Liberal Arts and Sciences “celebrity” cast

AMES, Iowa – A special production of Farmscape, a readers theatre production written at Iowa State, will feature a Liberal Arts and Sciences “celebrity” cast including the College dean, a distinguished professor, a university professor, and special music by a department chair. The performance is Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Memorial Union.

Farmscape was written by an English class taught by Mary Swander, distinguished professor of English and Iowa’s Poet Laureate. The nonfiction docudrama involves the changing farmscapes of Iowa in the eyes of varying real-life Iowans.

Large processors, small farmers, winery owners and the older generation of farmers are represented through documented interviews. The production has been performed across Iowa through a grant from the Leopold Center.

The Liberal Arts and Sciences cast includes:

Nikki Bado-Fralick, associate professor of philosophy and religious studies
Dean Bakopoulos, assistant professor of English
Lonnie Carrick, graduate assistant in English
Teresa Downing-Matibag, assistant professor of sociology
Arne Hallam, associate dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Joe Kupfer, university professor of philosophy and religious studies and director of the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities (CEAH)
Paul Lasley, professor and chair of sociology and anthropology
Barbara Mack, associate professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication
Jaime Reyes, owner of the Montebello Bed & Breakfast Inn and one of the interviewed stars of the production
David Russell, professor of English
Nick Van Berkum, communications specialist in sociology
Mike Whiteford, dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Dan Wise, graduate assistant in English
Zora Zimmerman, associate dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The cast also includes Carl Jacobson, professor and chair of geological and atmospheric sciences, playing the banjo and Mary Swander as director.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the performance.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is hosting Farmscape as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. Liberal Arts and Sciences was established as the College of Science and Humanities in 1959 after Iowa State became a university. In 1990, the college took on its current name to more accurately describe its many academic programs.

The Liberal Arts and Sciences production is cosponsored by AgArts and the Committee on Lectures (funded by GSB).
