ISU Flute Ensemble prepares for spotlight recital honors at National Flute Association Convention

The Iowa State University Flute Ensemble will be heading to Kansas City, Mo., next month to attend the National Flute Association's annual convention for the first time. The convention runs from Aug. 7-10.

The ISU musicians will be performing as part of the spotlight recital - meaning that while most ensembles play one piece, the ISU Flute Ensemble was selected to perform four pieces. The spotlight recital is a session set aside for ensembles asked to play multiple pieces.

"The honor is that they share the recital with the very best ensembles, as opposed to being asked to play one piece," said Sonja Giles, assistant professor of music, who leads the student ensemble.

The ISU ensemble earned the right to perform through a recorded audition. Ensembles from around the world will participate, and Giles estimates only one-sixth of the auditions are accepted.

"They really put in a lot of effort and time be chosen," Giles said about the 11 students who make up the ensemble.

The four pieces of music the group will play are all comparatively recent compositions. Giles described the music as modern, catchy people-pleasers.

"We work really hard to find a ‘cool' repertoire," Giles said. "We try to find the best pieces to squish into this little bitty amount of time."
