Remember when
Student-produced play looks at the day in a life of an amnesiac.
- What if you woke up one day and realized you didn't know who you were?
Or for that matter, you didn't know anyone else?
That's the premise of "Fuddy Meers," the upcoming ISU Theatre
production. The student-produced play will be presented at 7:30 p.m., March
27-29, with a 2 p.m. matinee scheduled for Sunday, March 30. All performances
will be held in the Fisher Theater on the Iowa State campus.
"Fuddy Meers" is the story of Claire (portrayed by Melanie Snow),
who has a rare form of amnesia that erases her memory whenever she goes
to sleep. Every morning she remembers nothing. Every morning her husband
comes in with a cup of coffee and hands her a book filled with essential
information and disappears into the shower. The rest of the play is a poignant
comedy that traces one womans attempt to regain her memory.
"It's a dark comedy," says Marcia Schultz, a senior performing
arts major who is the director of the production. "It's not really
slapstick, but it's just outrageous."
The play is set in one day in the life of Claire. She is kidnapped by her
"brother" and proceeds to meet a wide variety of dysfunctional
individuals throughout her day. One character is blind in one eye, has a
limp and speaks with a lisp. Another talks with the "assistance"
of a puppet.
"Claire has no idea what's going on throughout the day," Schultz
said. "She just wants to know the truth about everyone around her,
but no one will tell her.
"In the end, it's left to our imagination to determine what happens
next to Claire. That's one reason why I really like the play."
In addition to featuring an all-student cast and a student-director, the
entire production is student-designed including the sound, costumes, set
and lighting.
Other cast members include Melanie Allgood, Michael Dahlstrom, Scott Morehead,
Langley Neely, D'art O'Connor-DeLosRios and Sheena Seibert.
Tickets are $4 for adults, $2 for students and are available at the Iowa
State Center Ticket Office, all TicketMaster locations, or charge-by-phone
in Ames at 515-233-1888.
