LAS establishes new fundraising record in FY08

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences not only surpassed its fundraising goal in fiscal year 2008, it blew right past it.

LAS enjoyed the highest fundraising production in the college's history, raising nearly $23 million in outright gifts, pledges and deferred commitments. That exceeded the college's goal by over $12 million in the process.

The highly-successful fundraising effort this past year increases the total raised during Campaign Iowa State: With Pride and Purpose to over $44 million or 68% of the college's $65 million goal for the campaign.

Highlights of the $23 million fundraising effort in FY08 included a $10 million gift for the new chemistry building from Kathryn Hach Darrow and $4.5 million from the Carver Charitable Trust for the same project.

"We met our initial goal of $15.6 million to successfully complete the chemistry building campaign," said Alsatia Mellecker, executive director of development for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "With the assistance from the Iowa State and ISU Foundation staff, the goal was reached in two years."

Mellecker says however that efforts will continue in this area despite the initial success.

"After the announcement of the Hach gift, we have heard from other individuals who wanted to make gifts to the building because of the generosity of the Hach family," she said. "We continued to raise money for the project, knowing every dollar will help furnish the building with much-needed laboratory equipment and other building necessities."

Groundbreaking ceremonies for Hach Hall will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. Construction has already started on the facility.

Mellecker also said that for the reminder of Campaign Iowa State, the LAS development staff will focus on faculty and student support.

"We believe we have alumni and friends interested in supporting faculty and students," she said.
