Jazz Festival slated for VEISHEA Saturday at Iowa State University
-
In the back of his mind, Jim Bovinette has had a vision of a jazz festival
during VEISHEA but that's about as far as the event got.
This year however, Bovinette and his Iowa State University Jazz Ensembles
have combined forces with the VEISHEA student organizing committee and the
music fraternity and sorority Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma to hold
such an event.
The first annual ISU Jazz Festival will be held VEISHEA Saturday (April
21) from 1-6 p.m. Continuous jazz music will be played by Department of
Music jazz groups on a stage between the Music Hall and Carver Hall.
"The brick plaza between Carver and the Music Hall is a great location
for this type of event," Bovinette said.
The afternoon will begin with the ISU Jazz Ensemble II directed by Gary
Kleptach, followed by the department's three jazz combos directed by Mike
Giles. The ISU Jazz Ensemble I will be the final group to hit the stage.
Bovinette is the director of that ensemble.
Bovinette says each group will play for about 45-50 minutes followed by
a short break to get the next group on stage.
"The Taste of VEISHEA is just down from this area by Lake Laverne so
I hope everyone takes the opportunity to get some food there and come back
and spend the afternoon enjoying some great music performed by our jazz
groups," Bovinette said.
Two other jazz performances are scheduled by Iowa State in the coming weeks.
The ISU Jazz Ensemble I and II will perform Wednesday, April 11, at 7:30
p.m. in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall. Tickets are available at the
door for this concert.
Then on Monday, April 16, Iowa State's Small Jazz Ensemble will also present
a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall.
